packing station

The furniture industry is implementing more and more automation solutions. After all, our region is a real woody basin and a paradise for furniture manufacturers. A leading company in the industry challenged us and on its behalf we prepared a packaging stand.

Packages with furniture

We analyzed 32 different packages of furniture in terms of individual elements that are in it – from furniture boards, fillings, fittings and spacers. We’ve also developed a clever way to put these parts in packages.

 

Horus – a flexible tool

The biggest problem in the packaging process was the way the elements were fed. They were stored on pallets without positioning. The robot as a tool is very precise, but blind. Horus – the eye for the robot allows for offset processes so that the robot could take plates and spacers directly from the pallet.

 

 

 

Factory 4.0

Robotic packaging was possible thanks to a set of tools. A Horus scanning head and a Schmalz vacuum gripper  are mounted to the KUKA robot arm. The robot scans the working field in 3D, the algorithm marks the individual parts, and the gripper takes them. This flexible solution allows you to take with one tool both furniture boards (regardless of color, shape or thickness), paper spacers, honeycomb spacers. Tacktime for individual processes was 6 s for individual parts of the packages.

Robogrant

At Alnea, we know how to automate with our heads. We also optimize processes in the furniture industry. We are also waiting for the announcement of the PARP – Robogrant competition.  It is to include support for furniture companies in the purchase of a robot. PARP has been conducting promotional activities for several months, but the competition has not yet been announced, and the deadline is still being postponed.

5 levels of automation

The last few years have brought us an incredible increase in automation in the service sector. Digital transformation has also strongly affected some industries – especially food. Manufactured products must be of good quality, be diverse and tailored to the needs of the customer, and the fact that these change quickly so we need for flexibility. The 5 levels of automation present the perspective of the company’s development, from manual processes through the gradual increase of robotization, to the harmonious autonomy of all systems.

 

 

Company diagnosis

To start the transformation towards Industry 4.0, it is first necessary to make a diagnosis of the company in terms of process advancement and digital maturity. You can also create the entire Roadmap to Industry 4.0, i.e. the entire strategy of the company’s development towards the implementation of an appropriate business model and new technologies.

5 levels of automation

  1. Manual production

Manual production is characterized by companies in which the machine of automation. The processes take place without integration, the data is collected in paper form and then entered into a spreadsheet.

Actions are based on strict procedures, manual actions.

  1. The beginnings of automation

Machines appear, simple conveyors, but they are unitary. Implementation of new devices is difficult because it requires greater qualifications from operators and new procedures. The data is still collected in paper form.  This level is often characterized by randomness – purchases of new machines are not dictated by the development strategy.

  1. Process development

More machines mean more advanced procedures, faster product manufacturing and greater repeatability. Automated value chains are emerging. At this stage, the company should already have a whole development and transformation strategy in place to avoid unnecessary or unsuccessful investments.

  1. Advanced automation

Processes and machines are arranged in specific cycles, are measurable, standardized and repeatable. The data is collected digitally and processed in such a way as to improve production. Employees mainly deal with processes that are difficult to automate, but their main task is to supervise the work of machines.

  1. Full integration of machines, processes and people

Full integration of  machines, processes and people is Industry 4.0. Machines and robots as well as automated production lines cover almost 100% of processes. The integration also includes production data collected in BigData and processed in the cloud. Scalability of production is possible at the highest level of quality.  Humans continue to control machines and processes and create new quality in value chains.

Production processes – factory automation

Production processes are all activities related to the production of products. These include the gradual completion or creation of the expected product in accordance with the design or process assumptions.

 

Types of production

The production of products is linked to a value chain that includes supply, technological processes, transport and storage. Types of production can be differentiated by nature, location or volume.

Production lines

The organization of processes is arranged sequentially,where subsequent stages follow each other, finally giving the finished product. Production lines can be manual, semi-automatic or fully automated and robotic. Highly efficient lines are usually geared towards the production of one or several different products. Efficiency comes from the speed of individual processes, and the transformation of tools to different products affects volumes. Lines that are adapted to the production of different products must be equipped with additional equipment that will allow them to handle products that differ, for example, in size.

                                Production is flexible

An example of such a solution is a line for the installation of lighting lamps. On a conveyor with several different stations, you can put one of the many types of positioning trolleys, which are adapted to specific lamp sizes. In this way, production is flexible and more products can be added – all you have to do is design and manufacture a new typeofproduct.

                               Nest production

Nest production is a more flexible variant of a traditional production line. Individual workstations or process stations are not permanently bound by the flow of the product. This means that we can produce different types and types of products by changing the order of the stations. This type of production is possible if some technological processes do not have to follow each other.

                                Hi-runner

Our nest production concept has been applied to a factory in the furniture industry. We have unified all robotic stations, so they can be rearranged according to your needs. The most common products are manufactured on thehi-runnerline. On the other hand, all the others can be produced flexibly  by making  sockets in individual technological lines.

                                 Diffuse generation

Distributed production proved itself in the era of the pandemic, when various industries suffered from lockdown  or lack of raw materials. This type of manufacturing is not tied to a specific place. Based on 3D models, production can be subcontracted depending on the availability of human and material resources. This is where 3D printing and, for example, laser cutting work great. Distributed production allows you to save your own resources and make the customer independent of suppliers. New technologies  help to produce more and faster, but in this case the emphasis should be on the security of our data – i.e. digital libraries and data transfer, for example.

The 4th Conference Automation and Robotics of Industry

The 4th Conference Automation and Robotization of Industry is the largest event of this type in North-Eastern Poland. Targeted at manufacturing companies and integrators, it offers a high substantive level of knowledge about implementing innovations in factories. Automation and robotization are an important direction of changes that are so important for regional companies that want to remain competitive on the Polish and global market.

 

Our Mission

We want to bring the knowledge of A&R closer to the entrepreneurs of our region and neighboring voivodeships so that more and more companies gain knowledge on how to adapt their production to the requirements of the modern market. The development of new technologies is the foundation for the creation of more effective and advanced products or services. Implementation of innovations in everyday life – Smart City, medicine or  industry are strategic changes that shape modern society and affect the economy. Research and development is currently one of the most dynamically growing areas.

 

The Silent Revolution

Economic and social changes are usually associated with unrest and rebellion against technology. The silent revolution or digitization is playing out before our eyes. Waste management systems, light management centers, digital administration, e-prescriptions are just some of the unnoticed facilities that we use thanks to innovations, i.e. products and services created by research and development departments.

Research & Development

When Krzysztof Kamiński, the CEO of Alnea, received the Vector for 2018, the Jury justified the choice asfollows: “The efforts of the Alnea Group have been appreciated for introducing technologies into our lives, which recently we could only see on science-fiction films. For harnessing virtual reality to design, implement and supervise advanced automated production lines. ”

You would think that the whole of Alnea is a department of research and development.

B&R

Alnea started by creating production lines and assembly stations for the automotiveindustry. However, the more machines were created, the more  one key element was missing – a device that would provide vision for our robots. The B&R department was created to create such an eye for a robot. As a result,  we ran the project  “Automatic system of optical positioning in the space of anthropomorphic industrial robots” as operating within a fund  1.1.1.for which we received funding from the National Centre for Research and Development (NCBR).

 

How to create a research and development department

The answer to the question “how to create a research and development department” is not at all obvious. First of all, the most important thing is the goal – that is, what we want to achieve. Whether we want to change an existing product, create a new one or create a center for solving technological problems – the goal determines the direction, but the important, and actually the most important, is the foundation, i.e. people with specific competences. Technologies will grow like walls on this foundation, and they will be connected by a goal defined at the beginning. This is how a permanent “building” is created, i.e. the integration of human and technological resources.

Project management

Creating new technologies and implementing innovations is like managing a project whose goal is defined, but it is not always known whether it is achievable. Teams often face a variety of challenges that are not always easy to identify – such as the current lack of semiconductors on the market. That’s why our R&D team is so diverse – to deal with adversity in the most creative way.

Alnea is a finalist of the competition “Steersman. All ahead”

We are very pleased to announce that Alnea is a finalist of the “Steersman. All ahead.” During the gala on September 3 at the Anders Hotel**** in Stare Jabłonki, the jury of the competition distinguished enterprises and organizations that through a number of activities faced many different problems of the crisis. Alnea was awarded as a finalist. Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to the organizers of the competition and the chapter.

 

Facing challenges

2020 was a really difficult year. Many companies have faced challenges that have sometimes proven to be the cause of positive change and growth. Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego BGK was looking for such enterprises. Competition “Steersman. All ahead.”  was to show how companies were coping during the pandemic, restrictions, lockdowns  and broken supply chains.

Competition criteria

The competition was addressed to companies (micro, small, medium and large enterprises), public and local administration units, hospitals, as well as NGOs. The criteria of the competition refer to eight areas such as: leader, unconventional solutions, employment, pro-social activity, values, means, investments, new markets. The application had to describe how the company coped with the difficult time, taking into account the previously mentioned areas.

 

Alnea – small can be large

Alnea is not a big company. But it turns out that small can be large. Rapid adaptation to new conditions, support received as part of the protective shield allowed us to survive this most difficult period of great unknowns. We have always been focused on keeping the whole team because this is our motto of the family business. At the same time, we do not cease in our activities to popularize automation and robotization using our experience in system integration and robotics.

Steersman. All ahead.

The Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship is neither the richest nor the most developed. However, we have another advantage, i.e. beautiful nature, which allows us to live more peacefully, without haste, surrounded by the greenery of forests and the blue of lakes. The last ones are referred to by the Steersman competition – after all, it concerns ship captains who not only reach subsequent ports, but also sail at full speed and “all ahead”.

 

Alnea Activities

Alnea’s activities have already been awarded many times – Vector 2018, Laurel the Best of the Best 2019, Way tor Success 2020. Our activities for the benefit of the region, supporting entrepreneurship, development of technical education and implementation of new technologies are appreciated, although for us more than the award counts the effect, i.e. the development of our region in which we live.

Production lines – automation and robotization of production processes

Manufacturing companies are now facing increasing demands on the speed, quality and customization of  the production of goods and goods. The last few years indicate an increasing need for changes and development of Polish companies. Integrators are getting more and more inquiries about production lines, which means that automation and robotization of production processes is playing an increasingly important role.

 

Production processes

Production processes are all activities that affect the production of products. They cover the  entire value chain – transport, storage, material flows and direct actions on the raw materials, components and details that make up our final product. An important element are also technological processes related to, for example, soldering, gluing, welding, cooling, i.e. in general physico-chemical phenomena to which the product or its elements are subjected.

Types of production lines

The pioneer of production lines is considered to be the American tycoon Henry Ford, who more than a hundred years ago organized production processes in one sequence. Although, in fact, the very departure from the manufactory forced similar solutions in production companies. Although the lines were created, they now cover all industries and thanks to them most of the goods available on the market are mass-produced.

                Manual lines

Manual lines are an organized sequence of processes in which all actions are performed by operators. An example would be, for example, a packaging line. At the conveyor belt on both sides there are employees performing on the koela activities – laying cardboard boxes, inserting furniture, spacers, screws and finally close the lid and palletize the finished package. Such a line can be efficient, requires an efficient flow of details and a large organization of employees who are basically irreplaceable in it.

                Semi-automatic lines

Semi-automatic lines are equipped with a conveyor system and equipment that helps with assembly or other processes. Such a semi-automatic line can be a production line of lamp assembly. Thepalletsbetween the individualstationsare slowly replenished  by operators thanks to automatic screwdrivers, testers, etc.

Semi-automatic lines can also have robotic sections, but between them there is always an operator station that performs some of the tasks independently

                Robotic lines, automatic lines

Automatic lines are a string of automatic stations that perform a programmed sequence of actions one by one. The operator only added components, received products and watches over the correctness of processes. Yes! With automatic lines, a human is also needed. Robotic lines are advanced manufacturing centers that, although quite expensive to buy, allow you to maintain quality and stabilize production.

               Assembly stations, test benches

Sometimes we don’t need a production line. All you need is, for example, an assembly station or a test stand. With uncomplicated applications, a properly designed human-operated station is not only more efficient, but also cheaper.

Automation Integrator

Automation integrator is a technology company that integrates various components of automation, robotics or electrics. In fact, the scope of activity of integrator companies is much wider. Customers typically ask such companies to design a production line, robotic station, or machine with specific specifications. A good system integrator is also suitable for upgrading machines or integrating IT systems and machines at different levels – that is, in typical Industry 4.0 applications.

 

Where to start automation?

There is only one answer to the question of where to start automation. We start with the product! We analyze all materials and processes from the moment of ordering raw materials or components to the departure of the finished packaged product. What is important here is the way in which the components are fed (e.g. whether they are packed and fed in bags, feeders or trays) and all component activities and material flow. The integrator can look at these processes with a professional eye and find so-called  bottlenecks so that it can propose a new solution.

What is not worth automating?

Based on today’s technologies, almost anything can be done. But what is not worth automating? For sure what does will not have return of investment. Activities requiring agility of human fingers or visual inspection of man in some cases are better left to operators and assembles. On the other hand, repetitive operations such as twisting, soldering, packaging are best suited for automation and usually have a shorter payback time.

Quotation

Offering is the entire process of learning about customer demand. It includes not only the price, but also the specific solutions that the system integrator presents. The offer price consists of different parts such as:

– automation concept

– design and construction of structures, electrical, pneumatic, mechanical systems

– control and electrical cabinet

– ready-made automation components purchased from distributors – sensors, systems, security

– other machinery forming part of the contract – tooling robots, adhesive dispensers or gaskets,

– external expertise

– additional costs – accounting service, fuel, hotels, machine transport to customer.

 

 

 

 

Integrator like inventor

Most of the machines that make up engineering companies are basically inventions, actually prototypes. The whole complicated relationship between the ordering party and the contractor should be based on safety buffers. This means that excessive indicators (e.g. 100 % effectiveness) are in principle unattainable.   The integrator should behave professionally informing the client, and not accept kuntilde order to just keep the company.

Tough industry

System integration is a difficult industry that requires knowledge in many fields. It is impossible to be a specialist in all technologies, so sometimes engineers will only get acquainted with it in the purchase technology, and yet it still needs to be implemented and communicated with other systems.

Challenges

The challenges that await integrators continue to grow, as do the challenges facing manufacturing companies. A good partnership is the foundation for joint success. Automated assembly station

A large part of the production is still carried out in manual or semi-automatic mode. The use of advanced machines is common for components or products with very high precision, but there is still little investment in smaller companies. Assembly processes can be automated, a small change can give a big effect in the form of more stable and accurate production. It also allows you to exploit the potential of the operator.

Which assembly processes are easy to automate?

The simplest assembly processes for automation are usually soldering,twisting, folding (e.g. plastic part of the housing). Of course, some products are manufactured in such a way that automation will be unprofitable, or simply the product requires human intervention in terms of accuracy, manual sense or visual control.

Other  processes  do not directly interfere with the product, but contribute to faster production – e.g.  transport, packaging or palletizing.

Assembly stations

Alnea specializes in the construction  of machines, production lines, but we also create assembly stations. Typical mounting stations can be purchased from many companies. However, we equip our stations with equipment according to the customer’s demand. In addition, we create production testers that increase efficiency and reduce losses associated with further processing of defective or non-compliant products.

 

Semi-automatic assembly

To move away from manual installation, we can use semi-automatic installation. This is a good solution when some processes are easy to automate and others require operator involvement. An example of this is the position where the employee pre-assembles the product and then the machines weld, foil and label it.

Robotic assembly station

Bentley among the production stations is a robotic assembly station. The operator’s task is to deliver components, and integrated robotics and automation systems perform all activities including packaging.

The use of the Horus vision system significantly accelerates the offset of production processes, including assembly processes. Our riveting station for  sub-gutter hooks  has been designed to reduce employee interference.

Professions of future

Economic and social change has taken place extremely quickly over the last twenty years. The dynamic growth of available innovations and new technologies is noticeable in all areas of life, but above all in industry. Progressive automation and robotics shift production workers from simple actions to more advanced ones, and the concept of the profession of the future is slowly developed. However, for many years entrepreneurs have been struggling to recruit the right employees. This is because the education system is not flexible enough.

Difficult situation of employers

Many companies have launched their own employee training programmes. Some companies work with technical and industry schools to give young people the opportunity to practice, even those paid for in target jobs, with the promise of employment. A similar program was started by the Metalworking Cluster, of which Alnea is an active member. The cooperation of many companies with schools, the funding of laboratories and the purchase of new equipment or training of subject teachers turned out to be a great initiative, which was very successful in East Poland.

 

Activities of the Ministry of Education

The problems with educating young people have not been noticed by the government. The activities of the Ministry of Education are aimed at diagnosing demand and every year are published the most important professions of the future by specific provinces. Legislation already passed allows secondary school principals to create new class profiles. The combination of educational opportunities with the ministry’s forecast is already delivering concrete results. In particular, robot and automation distributors are happy to cooperate with technical universities and industry schools by retrofitting training stations. This is so important that young people learn from new technologies, not on machines remembering the late Polish People’s Republic.

Professions of the future

Listed in the notice of the Minister of National Education, the professions of the future are: automatic, electromechanics, electronics,  electrician, mechanic-fitter of machines and equipment, mechatronics, machine tool operator, automation techniques, road construction techniques, electronics techniques, electrician techniques, energy techniques, mechanical technician, mechatronics technician, programmer technician, welding techniques, robotics technician,  constructor/designer.

Interestingly, many of these professions are intended for people who would like to start working after school. The increasing digitisation and simplification of processes allows you to work in the profession without having to finish your studies.

 

Laboratory Program. My Profile

At Alnea, we know how important it is to educate children and young people. Laboratory project started by The President of Alnea Krzysztof Kamiński. My profile  is currently being implemented together with the Marshal’s Office and the Board of Education. With this initiative, students can visit different companies and talk to different employees about the opportunities of their professions.

We also discuss the topic of education at the Conference on Automation and Robotization of Industry. In 2020, despite the sanitary restrictions associated with the epidemic, the debate was held with the President of the Metalworking Cluster from Bialystok – Sebastian Rynkiewicz, Director of the Electronic and Telecommunication Schools in Olsztyn – Grzegorz Górski, Artur Zawadzki – Operational Director of Promotech from Bialystok, Małgorzata Hochleitner Director of the Faculty of Education, Education and Care from the Warmia-Mazury Education Board and President of the Alnea Group – Krzysztof Kamiński.
